Richard Nixon: an Unlikely Environmental Hero
~ Nixon's Environmental Legacy ~ Richard Nixon (R) served as the 37th president of the United States, from 1969 to 1974. While he may not have been everybody's favorite president, you can't really argue with all the great things that he did to protect the environment. According to this Richard Nixon Foundation article, he declared that the environment is the defining issue of the new decade, at his 1970 State of the Union address. "The great question of the Seventies is... shall we make our peace with nature and begin to make reparations for the damage we have done to our air, to our land, and to our water," he stated, earning him support from both sides of a politically divided nation.
